Executed with the vision of Architects at Saunders Boston.

Richard Herrmann Associates Ltd. was pleased to work alongside Architects Saunders Boston at St. John’s CE Primary School in Huntingdon.

We designed the structure and civil engineering for a new one-form entry extension to the existing school.

The extension consisted of eight classrooms, I.C.T. suite, library and, staff accommodation and was produced to demanding project timescales.

The project involved the use of a steel frame to support the duo-pitched roof and upper composite floor slabs. The structural design accommodated an open light well within the center of the building, as well as sloping ceilings to upper classrooms to achieve the architect’s desire for a light and open feel, whilst maximising floor space and buildability.

Careful consideration was given to the relationship of the steel structure with walls, floor, and roof elements to avoid protrusions within the clean lines of the architectural design. The structural design also considered construction sequences and contractor preferences to enable the project to be completed quickly and efficiently.

The civil engineering element of the project involved road and car park pavement design, as well as the design and detailing of new foul and surface water drainage systems, including attenuation and connection to mains sewers for eventual discharge at acceptable rates.
