Designing practical environments for the modern world
Data centres are the backbone of the digital age. By housing the infrastructure that keeps the world connected, and processing vast amounts of information every second, security and efficiency are paramount. However, whilst these environments may offer no margin for error and demand an exceptional level of precision, Richard Herrmann Associates Ltd possess the skills and knowledge to surpass these requirements.
We develop structures that can support critical systems, from cooling units and backup generators to vast arrays of servers, all whilst maintaining uninterrupted service. Having knowledge and experience in the sector, we appreciate the unique requirements of every project, and work closely with our direct clients and stakeholders to make planning a new build or upgrading an existing facility straightforward. Structures that account for your critical data systems
Our approach to data centres revolves around the idea of resilience. Structural strength and durability are at the forefront of every decision we make, ensuring the facility can handle heavy equipment, high loads, and the dynamic forces they generate. We take into account the intricate network of electrical and mechanical systems, integrating them seamlessly into the structure whilst ensuring the building remains flexible for future upgrades. This is critical to maintaining optimal environments for IT equipment, ensuring cooling systems, cabling pathways, and service routes are all integrated without compromising structural integrity.
Tackling data centre construction proactively
It’s no secret that data centres are highly sensitive environments, and thus the structural design must reflect that. During the planning and build processes, our engineers will consider the need for protection from external threats and explore additional measures we can take to safeguard equipment from environmental risks such as fire and flooding. By making the security of these vital assets a priority, we can create spaces that work for today and tomorrow.

The construction of an EU data centre
A challenging yet rewarding development transforming an unused warehouse into the home of major data equipment and back-up components.
Our involvement with a European project that consisted of the creation of a very large data centre being housed within a redundant distribution warehouse was challenging and very rewarding. The multi-million pound scheme consists of thousands of server racking bays located within the existing building, combined with a number of sizeable plant compounds housing generators and fuel tanks.
The large back-up generators were supported on steel framework within the external plant compound, with the accompanying fuel tanks buried below ground. The scheme required extensive liaison and coordination with specialist manufacturers and suppliers as well as traditional design of structure and foundations.
The project included the creation of new roads, secure entrance areas and loading bay canopies. The distribution of significant data cabling below ground throughout the site also required extensive design consideration, particularly where interfacing with the existing building.
