What to Send a Structural Engineer for an Accurate Quote
One of the most common reasons a structural engineering quote comes back higher than expected — or takes longer than it should — is simply that the engineer didn't have enough information to price the job accurately. The more context you can provide upfront, the tighter and more reliable the quote will be. Here's what's genuinely useful to send.
Drawings, even if they're not final
Existing floor plans, elevations, or a concept sketch from an architect or client all help. They don't need to be finished construction or manufacturing drawings — even a rough layout showing what's needed or what's changing gives an engineer a much better sense of scope than a description alone. If drawings don't exist yet, a simple sketch with rough dimensions is still far better than nothing.
A clear description of the works
What's actually needed or changing structurally? Removing a wall, adding a mezzanine, extending the footprint, changing the use of a space — be specific about what you're trying to achieve, not just the end goal. "We want an open-plan ground floor" is useful, but "we want to remove the wall between the kitchen and lounge, roughly 4 metres" is far more quotable. On a commercial project, "we want to support a new piece of equipment that weighs 100kg on a bespoke frame above a food processing line" is better than "we want to install a new piece of equipment".
Photos of the existing building
For refurbishment, alteration, or extension projects, photos of the relevant areas — inside and out — help an engineer get a feel for the existing structure, its age, and likely construction type, long before any survey takes place.
Any existing structural information
If you have previous structural drawings, calculations, or reports for the building — even old ones — send them. They can significantly reduce the amount of investigative work needed and often reveal useful information about foundations or existing concealed loadbearing elements.
Site constraints or known issues
Anything unusual about the site is worth flagging early: limited access, known subsidence history, proximity to neighbouring structures, trees close to foundations, or any party wall considerations. These affect both the engineering approach and the fee, so it's better the engineer knows from the outset rather than discovering it later.
Your timeline
When you need the work done — including any planning or building control deadlines — helps the engineer confirm whether they can resource the project appropriately, and flags early if there's a conflict.
Who else is involved
Let the engineer know if an architect, planning consultant, or other specialist is already appointed. Coordination between consultants is part of the job, and knowing the wider team from the start avoids duplicated effort.
Why this matters
Without this information, an engineer either has to price conservatively to cover the uncertainty, or ask a round of follow-up questions before they can quote at all — both of which slow things down. A well-packaged enquiry, even an informal one, usually gets a faster and more accurate response than a one-line email asking "how much would it cost to do some calculations?"
