Richard Herrmann Associates Launches Dedicated Defence & Military Engineering Service

We are pleased to announce a new addition to our website that highlights our ability to provide structural and civil engineering design services for Defence & Military projects. The new page reflects work our Chartered Engineers have long carried out for Royal Air Force stations and Ministry of Defence sites, and it gives defence clients and principal contractors a clear route to that expertise.

Why a dedicated defence service?

Defence and military infrastructure covers an unusually broad range of structures, from hangars, maintenance facilities and stores to communications infrastructure, hardstanding, security fencing and specialist equipment platforms. Working within an active RAF station or MoD establishment also brings practical challenges that conventional construction rarely faces: restricted access, security vetting, tight operational windows, and the need to work sensitively around live operations.

Our team has over 38 years of experience delivering technically demanding projects across the UK, including defence schemes. We plan, sequence and deliver our work to minimise disruption to site activity.

Engineering to a higher standard of resilience

Defence infrastructure often has to perform to a higher standard than typical commercial or public buildings. Structures may need to withstand extreme loading, support heavy or sensitive equipment, or be designed with extra consideration for security, protection and long-term durability. Our approach prioritises robustness, buildability and long-term performance, so that foundations, structures and supporting infrastructure can cope with the loading, environmental exposure and operational demands placed on them.

Areas of technical capability

Defence projects frequently call for solutions outside standard commercial practice. Our experience includes structural design and assessment for:

Where structures support sensitive or high-value equipment, our engineers work closely with the wider design team and specialist installers. Loadings, tolerances and interfaces are understood from an early stage. This matters most on communications and antenna projects, where structural support must integrate precisely with specialist mechanical and electronic systems.

Working in secure and regulated environments

Defence sites operate under different rules to conventional construction environments. Personnel security requirements, site access protocols, and compliance with MoD and Defence Infrastructure Organisation standards all shape how a project is run. We are experienced in adapting to these requirements and in maintaining the conduct, confidentiality and professionalism expected on operational RAF and MoD establishments.

We apply the same rigour to health and safety, quality assurance and documentation that defence clients and their principal contractors expect, so our input fits smoothly into wider project governance and reporting. Our directors have signed the Official Secrets Act, and we maintain strict confidentiality and discretion at every stage of our involvement.

New-build and refurbishment

We support both new-build infrastructure and the refurbishment, upgrade and remedial works needed to keep existing defence estate assets in service. We typically work as part of a wider project team, supporting principal contractors, specialist subcontractors and equipment suppliers delivering works on RAF and MoD sites. Every scheme is designed or overseen by a Chartered Structural or Civil Engineer.
