RHA appointed on Port of Tilbury wind turbine project

We are very pleased to announce that RHA has been appointed to assist Eco2 Management Services with the replacement of several wind turbines at the Port of Tilbury docks. This project enhances the sustainability and efficiency of renewable energy production in the region. The Port of Tilbury, being one of the major ports in the UK, plays a crucial role in the logistics and distribution sectors, and the improvement of the existing wind turbines that contribute up to 84% of the port's energy needs will also support their broader environmental goals.


The collaboration between RHA and Eco2 Management Services will utilise RHA's extensive experience in geotechnical engineering and the renewable energy sector, particularly in the installation and maintenance of wind energy systems.


Our involvement in this project will be focused on the validation and verification of the existing hardstanding and crane base areas. This process is crucial and will take place prior to the deployment of large cranes that are necessary for the replacement of the turbines. The validation process will involve a thorough assessment of the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of the hardstanding surfaces and crane bases, ensuring they meet the required safety and operational standards.


The Port is known to be built on extremely poor ground, with conditions known to pose challenges for construction and development activities as a result of the historic 'dredging landfill' use of the site. It is therefore essential that a thorough site investigation is conducted to assess the specific characteristics of the ground in detail.


We will conduct a series of detailed inspections and analyses, which will include soil testing, material assessments, and structural evaluations. Our team will utilise knowledgeable geotechnical engineers and an experienced site investigation team to gather accurate data on underlying strata. This will help us identify any potential weaknesses or issues that could affect the performance and safety of the cranes during their operation.


Traditional plate load tests will also be carried out to determine the load-bearing capacity of the sub-base material beneath the slab. The results obtained from this testing will provide invaluable data regarding the load distribution and the mechanical properties of the underlying materials. In conjunction with window sampling, which involves extracting soil samples from various depths and locations, these results will contribute to a more complete understanding of the ground conditions. The data gathered from both the plate load test and the window sampling will be instrumental in designing a temporary works crane mat base. This base is essential for supporting heavy lifting operations and ensuring stability during construction activities. By utilising the values obtained from the testing, RHA will be able to create a tailored solution that meets the specific requirements of the site, taking into account the unique challenges posed by the varying and poor ground quality.


Our verification process will also encompass the review of existing documentation and engineering reports related to the hardstanding and crane base areas. By cross-referencing this information with our findings, we can ensure that all aspects of the site are compliant with industry regulations and best practices. We will then liaise with our client to discuss our findings and recommendations. This collaborative approach will help to ensure that all parties are informed and aligned on the necessary steps to facilitate a safe and efficient turbine replacement process. Ultimately, our goal is to ensure a robust foundation for the cranes, thereby minimising risks and ensuring the successful execution of the project.
