We are delighted to be providing structural design services for our esteemed client, The Crown Estate, in relation to an exciting project that involves a modest-sized yet intricately designed extension to a property situated in the picturesque area of Gorhambury. This project represents a unique blend of architectural creativity and engineering precision, as it seeks to enhance the existing structure while preserving the character and historical significance of the property.

The extension is characterized by its innovative design elements that challenge conventional building practices. Our team is committed to ensuring that the structural integrity of the new addition aligns seamlessly with the existing building, employing engineering techniques and materials that not only meet safety standards but also enhance the aesthetic appeal of the overall structure.

The design approach will incorporate sustainable practices, aiming to minimise the ecological footprint of the extension while maximizing energy efficiency.

Throughout the design process, we will engage in close collaboration with the Architects Cameron Bosque Brooks to ensure that every aspect of the extension meets the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship. Our team will conduct thorough design to anticipate any structural challenges that may arise, allowing us to devise solutions that are both practical and innovative.

Architects Cameron Bosque Brooks have designed an intriguing asymmetric pitched roof profile that not only serves a functional purpose but also adds a distinctive character to the overall architectural composition. This roof design features a vaulted ceiling that enhances the spatial quality of the interior, creating an airy and open atmosphere. The vaulted ceiling will be supported by somewhat unusual perimeter walls, which are to be constructed using a combination of timber studwork and hempcrete blockwork. This choice of materials is particularly significant as it reflects a commitment to sustainable building practices while also ensuring structural integrity and thermal performance.

The use of timber studwork provides not only strength but also adopts a renewable resource, contributes to the eco-friendly credentials of the building. Meanwhile, hempcrete blockwork offers excellent insulation properties, promoting energy efficiency and reducing the building's carbon footprint. The combination of these materials showcases a modern approach to construction that pays homage to traditional building methods, blending the old with the new in a seamless manner.

To further enhance the visual appeal of the structure, the roof will be clad with profiled zinc metal sheeting. This choice of material is not only durable and weather-resistant but also contributes to a sleek, contemporary look that contrasts beautifully with the warmth of the timber cladding on the walls. The zinc sheeting will reflect light in dynamic ways throughout the day, creating a changing appearance that adds to the building's uniqueness. The external timber cladding will provide a tactile quality and natural warmth, establishing a dialogue between the modern design elements and the traditional materials that have been used for centuries in construction.

This thoughtful integration of materials and design elements results in a striking modern aesthetic that respects and draws inspiration from traditional construction techniques. The overall design not only prioritis

es functionality and sustainability but also aims to create a visually compelling structure that stands out in its surroundings while providing a welcoming and comfortable space for its occupants. The combination of these innovative architectural features and carefully selected materials illustrates a forward-thinking approach to design that is both contemporary and rooted in historical context.

We are not only excited about the opportunity to work on this project with The Crown Estate, but we are also committed to delivering a structural design that reflects the unique vision for the extension, enhances the property’s functionality, and respects the historical context of Gorhambury. We look forward to bringing this innovative project to fruition and contributing to the legacy of this remarkable property.
