An ever growing requirement for placing solar energy capturing photovoltaic panels on existing roof structures has seen a sharp rise in demand for our services in determining the suitability of the roof structure.
We are well versed in visiting, measuring and recording existing roof construction and subsequently carrying out structural calculations to determine the roof structure's capability for supporting the additional weight. Consideration also needs to be given to how the PV panel weight is supported by the roof, the suitablility of any proposed fixings, as well as issues that can result in failure such as snow loads, wind forces, particularly uplift.
If you are considering the installation of PV panels, or any other plant or equipment on your roof, please bear in mind that most roofs were only designed to support a certain amount of snow load, along with the materials themselves. The implications of any additional loads to the existing roof structure should be carefully considered before carrying the works out.
It is quite common to find that the roof has a limited capacity and in these scenarios we would work alongside your PV provider to create a layout and extent of panel installation that is structurally acceptable, where possible. Alternatively we would advise on the nature and extent of remedial works to the structure that might allow their installation as intended.
If you are carrying out, or considering the feasibility of PV panel installation on your building, please contact us to see how we can assist you with your project.
